Bluff Lake’s History

Big Bear was a central part of the western expansion of Early American settlers. During the Gold Rush of the 1800s, thousands flocked to the western United States and settled in Big Bear. On their way over, they would stop at Bluff Lake. There was also once a YMCA summer camp built by early pioneers in the late 1800s. Stagecoaches and travelers all came by the area to find their new homes. Bluff Lake is also featured in some of Hollywood’s most iconic movies. It was the setting of the 1961 Disney movie “The Parent Trap,” where they filmed many of their summer scenes. It was also the set of the Eddie Murphy film “Dr. Doolittle 2,” where some camp and lake scenes were filmed. Because of the incredible beauty, many car commercials have also been filmed here.
